Kevin Mearkle to present “The Underground Railroad in Bedford County” on June 20

HOLLIDAYSBURG – The Blair County Genealogical Society will meet at 7:00 pm Thursday, June 20th, 2024 at the Roller Hojeth Memorial Library, 431 Scotch Valley Rd.  Hollidaysburg, PA. 

Our June meeting will be local author Kevin Mearkle speaking about his book “The Underground Railroad in Bedford County”.

The book details activities of the Underground Railroad and some of the people that helped enslaved people to freedom in the north.  The book also contains over 100 photographs and images of people, landmarks, slave registration documents, and reward advertisements for runaway enslaved people in nearby newspapers. 

Kevin Mearkle is a 1978 graduate of Everett Area high school and a Shippensburg University History graduate.  He has authored two other books, “Civil War Soldiers of Bedford County” in 2021 and “Battlefield Tour Guide of Bedford County Soldiers at Gettysburg and Antietam” in 2022.

All presentations are free and open to the public.  Donations are greatly appreciated.
